Celebrate Buy Nothing Day instead! Swing by the Echo Park Film Center for this free, direct animation drop-in workshop and create your own handmade, one-of-a-kind piece of cinematic art. Our staff will show you the basics of frame-by-frame animated filmmaking by cutting, pasting, and drawing directly onto 16mm film stock.
This is a casual open house-style workshop, so feel free to come and go at your leisure, bring some Thanksgiving leftovers to share, and escape the shopping crowds.

The Red Turtle by Michael Dudok De Wit

Ayer vi la película La Tortuga Roja, dirigida por Michael Dudok De Wit y producida por Studio Ghibli. Es una película muda de animación franco-japonesa que cuenta la historia de un náufrago que acaba llegando a la orilla de una isla habitada por tortugas, cangrejos y pájaros.
Michael Dudok De Wit recibió un mesaje del conocido estudio de animación japones después de ganar el Oscar al mejor cortometraje de animación de 2001 con Father and daughter. Una vez establecidas las conversaciones pertinentes, Michael, de origen holandes, tardó diez años (justo ayer era el aniversario) en completar esta maravilla dibujada a mano.

Fue una sesión con la presencia del director y coloquio anterior y posterior a la película.  Le hicimos alguna pregunta y después conversé un rato con él y tuvo la amabilidad de firmarme un par de posters que tenía impresos.

El Studio Ghibli hace una excepción y pone su logo en rojo.

OMPHALOS de Kim Jung Gi

Con una portada de piel falsa y con el dibujo de un ombligo, OMPHALOS, es el libro que me firmó Kim Jung Gi. No tengo palabras para describirle. Es simplemente un mago del dibujo, un tormento de ideas que fluyen de sus rotuladores sin cesar, para las cuales no necesita ninguna referencia.

"Omphalos is a compilation of the best Erotic drawings that KJG has produced during the last years. Comic pages, illustrations, doodles …. every source has been included ! And even better than that : when the compilation of the drawing was ready, we decided to include some more drawings from the past works of KJG as a bonus material. Bottom line : about 250 pages of new illustrations + 70 of the best previous ‘explicit’ stuff."

TRUMP WON, NOW WHAT?

Estamos convocando una Asamblea Popular para el martes 15 de Noviembre de las 6pm a 9pm para discutir y analizar el momento actual (analysis de coyuntura), discutir nuestros sentimientos sobre la seguridad en nuestras comunidades, y también discutir colectivamente como prepararnos y que hacer para defender nuestros derechos y nuestra dignidad.

La Asamblea Popular ha sido utilizada por comunidades a través de America Latina como una manera de convocar grupos grandes y diversos, para crear un entendimiento mas profundo sobre la coyuntura actual y, mas que nada, para pensar colectivamente y estratégicamente como producir acciones concretas y fuertes que nos ayuden a avanzar los intereses de nuestras comunidades.

En estos tiempos inciertos e inseguros nuestra única solución real es organizar dentro de nuestras propias comunidades. No podemos depender solo en las instituciones políticas y en politicos que solo piensan en si mismos y continuamente le fallan a nuestras comunidades. Nuestro movimiento tiene que comenzar desde abajo, tiene que comenzar con las voces de esos que han sido mas afectados y este espacio es un esfuerzo para hacer eso.

CARECEN, IDEPSCA y NDLON están convocando la Asamblea Popular inicial pero esperan que otras organizaciones, colectivos, y miembros de la comunidad participen en el proceso.

We are convening an Asamblea Popular for Tuesday, November 15th from 6pm-9pm in order to discuss and analyze the current moment, share thoughts and feelings about safety in our local communities and to collectively discuss how to prepare and what to do next to defend our rights and our dignity.

The Asamblea Popular (popular assembly) has been used by communities all over Latin America as a way to convene large and diverse groups, to create a better understanding of the current moment and, most importantly, to think collectively and strategically to produce powerful actions that help advance safety in our local communities.

In these uncertain times, our only real solution is to organize within our own communities. We cannot solely depend on political institutions or self-serving politicians that continuously fail our communities. Our movement must be from the bottom up, it must start with the voices of those most affected. This space is an attempt to do that.

CARECEN, IDEPSCA and NDLON are convening the initial Asamblea Popular but hope that other organizations, collectives and individuals will join the process.
